Editorial Review:

Amazon.com essential recording:
Though the minor hits "Wonder" and "Jealousy" bore a reasonable resemblance to Merchant's work with 10,000 Maniacs, most of Tigerlily clearly established her as a solo artist apart from her former band. The record's first single, "Carnival," drove that point home, with a hook based more on rhythm than melody and the haunting voice of Katell Keineg adding an intriguing dimension to the chorus. Elsewhere, much of Tigerlily is remarkably solemn and subtle, from the low-key opener "San Andreas Fault" to the widower's lament "My Beloved Wife" to the eight-minute opus "I May Know the Word." Also of note is "River," an emotional ode to friend and fallen star River Phoenix. --Peter Blackstock

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Love This Album!
This is my mellow and happy album. Perfect for sitting on the side of the beach in the Caribbean or just resting at home. The voice is sultry and relaxing and years later I still listen to the album regularly.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Nearly 13 years after its release and still a favorite
Here I am listening to Natalie's album nearly 13 years of after its release and the song "River" caught my attention. It took me this long to figure out that this song may be about the death of River Phoenix (yes, I just now paid attention to the lyrics). Still one of my favorite albums of all time.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good CD, some of it doens't hold my interest.
People have opinions on just about everything: Your shoes, clothes, smile, weight, you name it. I have to be honest in that I really have never given a second glance in Natalie Merchants direction. Maybe it was the fact that I looked at the name of the pulishing entity 10,000 maniacs chose to use, and noticed it was anti-christian in nature (of course this was ten plus years ago, they may have changed the name now). At any rate Natalie Merchant was never on my radar screen. Then, out of the blue ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - As Beautiful As A Tigerlily
I was skeptical about this album initially after reading the scathing review Rollin Stone magazine gave it. It just shows that you can't always trust the megalomaniac corporation that that magazine is. Tigerlily is an astounding collection of songs from a woman obviously trying to shake her reputation as band fronter for 10,000 Maniacs. Accomplished and wholly cohesive is the only real way to describe this album, never in a long time have I heard an album where no song deliberately tries to tussle ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Natalie Merchant - Tigerlily on DVD-Audio
This is a very nice sounding version of this album. You have to have a DVD player to play this version, and better yet one that plays DVD-A to get the most out of this specific format.

WHAT I LIKE - It plays at a higher resolution for better sound. You can view the lyrics on your TV and watch a video of song, "Carnival" although it is not in the high-resolution audio format.

WHAT I DON'T LIKE - If you have a 2-channel audio system, your player may not down-convert the multi ... Read More
