Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Perhaps inspired by the reissue of his two classic 1970s recordings (found on Flying Fish's Solid Gove), the revered folkie puts out his first new solo work in 20 years. It's unreasonable to expect Scrivenor to equal his high-water marks, and Shine On rarely does. Still, Scrivenor's warm, inviting voice has only ripened with age and he benefits from the vocal assistance of Nanci Griffith, Lari White, John Prine, and LeAnn Etheridge. He contributes six solid originals (including the delicate autoharp showcase "Maybelle's Dance") to accompany covers of Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Jimmy Cliff, and Guy Clark. Unfortunately, many of the songs drop the blues and country influences from his signature country-folk- blues hybrid, replacing those roots with milder, new age-influenced concerns. When Scrivenor does play the rootsier angles---on Dylan's "Girl from the North Country," Jack Clement's "I've Got a Thing About Trains," and the jazzy "Balloon Song" for example---he recaptures the old magic that made him revered in the first place. --Marc Greilsamer

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Gove is a master!
I own every one of Gove's albums: Heavy Cowboy, Solid Gove (Shady Gove and Coconut Gove, Coconut Gove LP record, and now this album. Gove sings in many great styles and is a master of the autoharp. This album is wonderful!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Album, hope he releases more
I nearly wore out my Gove Scrivenor LPs and was pleased to find two CDs now available. Solid Gove contains most of the tracks available on the LPs, while Shine On contains new music. Gove is an incredible instrumentalist with a smooth and haunting voice to complement. These albums are amongst my very favorites. Especially enjoy "Boats to Build," "Sitting Here in Limbo," and "Shine On."

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Awesome
This is a triumphant return for Gove, and a GREAT album. That warm and rich voice, good and great lyrics, and excellent instrumental accompaniment. Certainly for the fans of Shady Gove and Coconut Gove, and for a much broader range of musical tastes as well.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Professionally equal to the top ten.
"Shine on" Puts the wind beneath my wings. Very few CD's you can say you love all the songs. How can you not love his music. Gove becomes his music! He's Great!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I consider Shine On to be Gove's best.
All you ole folkies should add Shine On to your collection. Gove should be very proud of this one. It's a very enjoyable CD, and it proves that Gove continues to shine on with his music.
