I first heard this recording over 25 years ago and I haven't tired of it since. I feel that this recording reflects the opera's roots in Czech folklore better than the Makerras/Popp/Vienna Philharmonic production. Popp, known primarily for her roles singing light-lyric or coloratura roles, does not bring the depth that this opera requires. This recording, dating back to the early 70's, is not of the same technical quality of the Makerras one. But to my way of thinking, I'd rather hear a greater performance ...

I love the music of Janacek, particularly his operas, and like many Janacek-lovers, I own the Mackerras versions. Last month, I bought this set based on the recommendation of Amazon reviewer (hopefully still here) "Howard in Philly". I could tell by the way he expressed himself that he knew what he was talking about; and that he and I shared similar approaches to music.
