Choklate - Choklate (Kajmere Sound, 2006)
Don't ask how I found out about this artist but I'm glad I did. It's always those under-the-radar artists who make the better-sounding albums of the year. Choklate brings an impressive debut of soul, R&B, hip-hop and a few dusty samples all rolled into one (it also doesn't hurt that she wrote all of the songs herself).
She also brings that Cali R&B sound that's been missing lately (even though she was born in Seattle, she was raised in San Diego), thanks to producers like Vitamin D and Jake One, known for his work with rappers E-40 and Casual. In fact, a few songs like "Long Way" remind me of another Cali artist, Goapele. All of the songs are great but the best ones are "Waitin'" with the only guest appearance, Chali 2na of Jurassic 5 (also from Cali), "Bigger Than You", "Gettin' is Good", "What's About to Go Down" and the hidden track (it's untitled but it might be called "Fire Water"). One minor flaw, though: the track listing on the album is incorrect; "Dedicated to Music" is listed as following "Heavy" but it's really the other way around.
You may have to do some searching to find this album but it's worth it. Pretty soon it might not be so hard because the label that she's on, Kajmere Sound, seems to be on the come-up: check out their compilation, The Kajmere Sound Volume One for proof. I hope to hear more from Choklate in the future. -EJR

I purchased this CD on a whim and have been more than pleasantly surpirsed. Choklate has fanstastically bluesy voice that heralds back to singers like Tina Turner with some hip-hop and new soul thrown in. It is a strong album all the way through, but I especially like the song "Waitin" which features Chali2na of Jurassic5. If you enjoy "neo-soul" or just good soul music, this is an album that really needs to be a part of your collection and that you need to tell all of your friends about so Choklate can get the recognition that she deserves.

This is a great album. If you are a lover of music you will not regret adding this to your collection. Each song has its on feel: inspiring, sultry, fun-loving, overall grade A. You will enjoy this album.

I wanna join the chorus praise for this remarkable album by a young woman who deserves to be huge. This is modern soul at its absolute best. Her vocals are rich and emotional, and the hip-hop producers on here give the beats are real edge to complement some first class songwriting. Among many stand-out tracks, "Incredible" shines even brighter as an classic gem. I want to see her live. So Choklate baby, please come to London. Much love

This is the hottest thing I've found in 2006 musically. This sister's beautiful voice is the first thing I listen to everyday and is my theme music during my commute to and from work. This is a must get. If Jill Scott had a new funky soulful album this would be it.
